Vedanga Jyotisham, the most ancient, systematic and authentic treatise available on the subject was sermonized by the Sage Lagadha about 3500 years ago, in a very rational form and crowned as the Vedanga. The text of the work separately pertains to the Rigveda and Yajurveda, together is known as VJ. The Atharva Jyotisha is entirely different, thus, not considered a part and parcel of the VJ. It was customary for Vedic Brahmanas to recite the text of VJ, once a day till the 20lh century. Like the Vedas, the work has been handed down through oral transmission only.
